Cafe Turko is a family-owned Turkish restaurant, café, and catering established in 2012 by Gencer and Süreyya Gökeri. Offers Turkish cuisine and pastries, Located in Seattle, Washington.

What is the status of the project?

Redesign Cafe Turko website - user research - The final prototype and wireframe are delivered.

Project Overview

Our team started the process with contextual research to hear about the existing problems from users, we evaluated heuristics and we did comparative/competitive analyses to have a better understanding of the market and necessary features for the website. We documented the user journey map on the existing website, conducted extensive in-person and online interviews to discover the existing pain points in the conversion funnel.

Lastly, we created a new UX design that takes into account our goal

My contributions

My role in this project was as a UX designer. I was involved in everything from research to prototyping.

I worked on a two-person team from Iran and the United States.

As part of my UX class, we worked on a redesign project for five weeks from December 2020 to January 2021.

Challenge

The design task specifically mentioned that the redesigned website solved the problem of the food pick-up process and discovered pain points, and proposed a solution to improve user experiences.

Solution

1- Redesign the home page based on user research

2- Redesign the food menu

3- Design a transparent pick-up process for the customer

Design Process

Discover

Usability testing on current website

In the first step, we tried to identify the weaknesses of the website. In this way, we did a few usability tests on the current website of Kafe Turko to have a more accurate view of the website from a user point of view.

Small tasks were assigned to users to follow them and give their feedback on their emotions on those tasks.

review the menu

Search for the menu was the other primary task that we asked users to follow; they could have to find the menu, but loading too much information gave them a vague feeling about the menu

Order for pickup

Users have been told to order food using the website, and this path stopped after users faced a banner with a phone number that asked users to call the restaurant if they wanted to order online.

Catering order

This task takes our users on a confusing journey. They were faced with a long list form of information they had to fill out.

After usability test on our potential user, there was some obstacle they were facing. Difficulty in finding the information users was looking for, some of them had a problem with browsing the menu, Pickup and Catering give them the Ambiguous instruction, and although there was too much information for reading, hardly user could find the relevant information that they need. Too much reading, too little relevant information, and unappealing food photo were some of the problems some users mentioned in their comments.

Heuristic Evaluation

Alongside the usability test, our implicates Jakob Nielsen’s rules to evaluate the user experience on digital platforms. Some content and their presentation way on the current website are not following the rules on heuristic evaluation.

Consistency and Standards

some CATs are texts some are icons

Match Between System and Real World

Standard written language not observed

Flexibility and Efficiency of Use

no search bar provided in the menu content

Aesthetic Design and Minimalism

The hierarchy of information should be considered on the home page.

User Control and Freedom

users cannot remove any specific item in basket

Error Prevention

Both delivery or delivery options can be selected without any error

Competetive Analyses

To understand the landscape of competitors We choose similar websites and businesses to find out the pros and cons of current websites to understand the strategies we have to compare.

Competitor analysis helped us decide what to put on the homepage. It provided insights into the features, functions, and flows. It uncovered valuable opportunities to create a product that could stand out from the competition.

Define

Exploration

Well, now we have some problems and for this project we wanted to work on one of them focusing on the user experience. As a result, reviews to the blog https://inthekitchenwithkath.com/

We encountered and found that the process

There is a problem with the food pick-up / tick-off process

The only information available for this process is in this section, which asks customers to call the restaurant to coordinate and order a pick-up, which is not a comfortable and straightforward job for customers in different ways in today's world.

Develop

Information Architecture / Card Sorting

Design

Sketches and Wireframes

The website will be designed based on persona needs and preferences.

Learnings and Reflections

Iteration is the key to user experience

As much as I step up in this project, i understand how iteration would affect on a product and also help the business to always stay on the marke

Simplicity and intuitiveness might be the best solution. Less is more.

Constant communication is the essential key when working in a team.

you are designing for users; always their experience is the priority

I knew that I had to put users always at the center to assess each product.

Do not expect your assumption always to be true

During the usability test, I learned so much about my users and their methods of interaction. Sometimes I wonder why they don't see a button that I design based on my assumptions, and they choose a different path to achieve their goals.
